Egypt: Gift of the Nile

Picture
"Egypt: Gift of the Nile", from the Royal Ontario Museum,  invites visitors to explore an ancient civilization that flourished for thousands of years. The Nile River Valley of 5,000 years ago was the birthplace of a remarkable civilization. Protected from foreign invasion by vast deserts and sustained by fertile soil along the river, the ancient Egyptians developed from a simple agricultural community into a sophisticated society. Under a system of divine kingship, this Egyptian civilization lasted thousands of years and contributed strongly to the later cultures of the Mediterranean and Europe.
The exhibit includes 68 authentic Egyptian artifacts including jewelry, carvings, writing implements, fabric and more. It also includes a full sized replica sarcophagus.  Museum staff have also set up activity centers for decoding hieroglyphics and creating Egyptian style jewelry out of common household materials.  School and community groups are invited to book tours and/or interactive exhibit based programming.

North Bay's Heritage Sites

This photo display includes twelve of the properties recognized by North Bay’s Municipal Heritage Committee (MHC).

The MHC provides advice to City Council on matters and properties with architectural and/or historical significance. The MHC also evaluates properties that have heritage significance in order to develop and maintain a list of heritage properties in the community.

The overarching goal of the North Bay Municipal Heritage Committee is to achieve conservation through community recognition and awareness. Since its inception, the MHC has recognized over fifty properties for their heritage characteristics.

This exhibit shines a light on the work of the Municipal Heritage Committee and the diversity of North Bay's heritage properties.

The Barn Raising Project

The Huronia Branch of the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild created “The Barn Raising Project” in collaboration with the Simcoe County Museum. The exhibit features rural scenes from across Canada and commemorates our rural roots. The colorful display of fibre art was handcrafted using traditional rug hooking techniques.

The “Barn Raising Project” is on display at Discovery North Bay Museum until February 28, 2016. The North Bay "Rags to RIches" club will be at the museum on Wednesdays from 10:00am-2:00 pm during the exhibit to demonstrate the art of rug hooking for visitors.
